Client’s Goals
- Integrate appliances.
- Transform a bi-level island into a single level to create more continuous countertop space.
- Impart a traditional, hand-painted and glazed look.
- Increase storage.
Designers’ Solutions
- Remove soffits to allow for increased cabinet height for more storage space.
- Enhance traditional look by including high crown moulding in the space opened by removal of soffits.
- Include deep pan drawers on either side of range, rollouts and pullouts to enhance storage.
- Re-site an oven/microwave that was previously over the range to the island to create a more usable food preparation area.
- Incorporate built-in range and refrigerator into integrated design.
- Add china cabinet for fine dish storage.
- Feature traditional custom hood.
- Create single-level island with plenty of countertop space.
Cost
The initial cost of the kitchen, which only included cabinets, appliances, countertops and labor, was $49,000. The final cost for those items was $45,000; the project came in under budget because the custom cabinets cost less than anticipated.
