Project Description
Client’s Goals
- Make kitchen more efficient using existing space.
- Increase cabinet storage.
- Improve lighting.
- Update appliances, add a dishwasher, and change range from electric to gas.
- Create a look that is more 1950s retro than the actual 1950s kitchen that exists in the house.
- Do it all with a $25,000 budget.
Designer’s Solutions
- Move stove to a longer wall, creating more workspace around the stove while maintaining adequate landing space at the refrigerator.
- Increase cabinet storage by using frameless cabinets, a full and a ½ round lazy Susan in the base corners, and full round lazy Susan shelves in the upper corners.
- Install a microwave-hood combination unit to free additional counterspace.
- Install a new dishwasher to the left of the sink and a new self-cleaning gas range with sealed burners.
- Add new recessed lighting in place of a single, two-tube fluorescent fixture.
- Create a retro 1950s look with color and accents like polished chrome cabinet pulls and placement of 1950s memorabilia throughout.
- Use removable colored cabinet door inserts that will enhance color scheme and 1950s feel.
Special Notes
- Project won the local National Association of the Remodeling Industry’s 1999 Contractor of the Year award in the Under $30,000 category.
Cost
The project began with an initial budget estimate of just under $25,000. It grew to a final cost of $25,846 after the client chose recessed lighting instead of a ceiling fixture and upgraded some appliance selections.
